Nursing is an honorable career, and should be treated as much more than a paycheck or means of living. I believe that within every great nurse lies a burning passion for the practice. Since I can remember considering “what I want to be when I grow up”, a strong desire to help people through the nursing profession has been my calling. As a nurse, my mission is to confidently provide nonjudgmental, holistic care to those in need, advocating for my patients every step of the way.
My personal philosophy is that nurses have a social responsibility to the public to provide safe, holistic, patient-centered care. My patients are not merely room numbers or medical conditions, but individuals whom are all unique and require specialized attention. As advocates, we should empower patients through use of evidence based practice, while also educating and encouraging them to set goals for their health. Moreover, as healthcare providers, we should hold ourselves to a high standard of healthy behaviors in our own lives, believing that we will provide better care to others if we care for ourselves.
My core values and beliefs as an individual are empathy, loyalty, persistence, family, and achievement of goals. These values make up my day-to-day decisions and how I live my life overall. The focus of nursing is patient advocacy for healing, safety, and empowerment. My personal and professional core values are harmonious because they overlap with the driving forces behind the profession of nursing. These qualities that make a good nurse cannot be turned off at the end of shift, but are an inherent part of me as a person. I carry them with me always. Staying true to my values and vigilant in providing quality care, I will remember that I am not perfect and will continue my work with confidence, knowing that I am a better nurse than the day before and will be a better nurse tomorrow.
